In 1965, Australia was authorised to produce its own national decimal currency, transitioning from pounds, shillings and pence to dollars and cents. The opening of the Royal Australian Mint marked a new era in Australia’s history and the beginning of a modern national coinage. Sixty years on, the Mint is an award-winning cultural institution that has produced billions of coins and welcomed millions of visitors from around the world.
To celebrate this significant milestone, the Royal Australian Mint is hosting a free Family Fun Day from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, 28 February. The grounds surrounding the Mint will come alive with live music, hands-on activities and entertainment designed for all ages. Visitors can enjoy a coin swap, kids coin trade, face painting, BBQ and a range of activities catering to both seasoned coin collectors and those new to the hobby. Expert speakers from the Mint will also present engaging talks, offering fascinating insights into the coin-making process—from design and engraving through to production. The coin swap provides collectors of all ages the opportunity to expand their collections by exchanging cash for coins, including hard-to-find coloured circulating coins.
For those just starting out, it’s an easy and affordable introduction to coin collecting. The kids’ coin trade, designed for children aged 5 to 12, allows young collectors to trade ordinary coins for special Mint collectables, sparking curiosity and excitement. As a special keepsake, visitors can press a 60th anniversary coin featuring an exclusive ‘60’ countermark, available only at this event.
While visiting, guests are encouraged to explore the coin museum and new decimal currency displays. Bring a picnic to enjoy in the covered picnic area, choose a BBQ lunch, or visit the Mint Café, which offers kids’ meals and meal deals. The event is family – and wheelchair – friendly, with free entry and on-street parking available.
Please come prepared for all weather and stay hydrated using the Mint’s onsite water refill stations.
