Drive to Canberra

Ready to experience all that Canberra has to offer? Here’s how you can get here – by plane, car, train or coach.

The drive to Canberra is easy and scenic. There are plenty of places along the way to rest, refuel and revive. From Sydney the trip is only a 3.5-hour drive down the Federal Highway.

Trains & Coaches

Countrylink trains operate daily from Sydney and V/Line runs from Melbourne with a combined train and coach service daily. Coach services run throughout the day from Sydney and Melbourne, with hourly departures on the Murrays Coaches from Sydney to Canberra.

Flying to Canberra

Qantas, Virgin Australia, Link Airways and Fly Pelican offer flights to and from cities in Australia.

When You Arrive

Once here, you’ll discover the ease of travelling around our planned city. Take a public bus, the light rail, a taxi, Uber or a tour and you can be on the other side of Canberra in 40 minutes. Alternatively, drive yourself around. Traffic flows easily – even our roundabouts are easy to negotiate. Take a self-guided driving tour and learn more about the Australian Capital Territory.

Canberra has an enviable network of cycle and walking paths. Discover our national attractions and many of our best features on a self-guided walking tour or hire a bike from the Canberra and Region Visitors Centre and be refreshed with a ride.

Ensure physical distancing when queuing. If you are picnicking and the area is congested, find another location where you can maintain physical distancing. Follow directions of COVID marshalls, security, ACT Police and Event staff to ensure compliance with the current ACT Health COVID requirements.
