“Murray and the Movers” – previously known as Murray Cook’s Soul Movers – are joint-fronted by original Red Wiggle, Murray Cook and lead vocalist Lizzie Mack. The new band name highlights the collaboration between the musician and his band, which plays across a wide range of retro genres including Indie Rock, retro R&B, blues and roots plus a funky, soul-infused style of music inspired by the 1960s and 70s.
From a stream of cool, pure, retro power-pop (with a hint of 90’s grunge and keys that could have been plucked from Elvis Costello himself) “If I’m With You” takes its cues from the sparkling melodies of 1980’s girl bands like The Go-Go’s,The Bangles, and the biting edge of mid ’90s favourites like Matthew Sweet. But this track – and new move from the band – underlining it’s FINAL name change – is not about excess — it’s actually about control.
What’s left out matters as much as what’s played, every note sharpened and refined – a deliberate step away from some of the more organic gestures associated with The Soul Movers. Murray, Lizzie and The Movers can’t wait to hit the road with new track – and music video – “If I’m With You” – come catch them at Enlighten!
