Since its introduction in 2011, the Enlighten Festival has redefined autumn in the nation’s capital, lighting up Canberra with a bold blend of culture and creativity. Evolving from a local illumination event into a world-class celebration, the festival is a yearly invitation to explore Australia’s cultural icons in a whole new light. For over 15 years, the event has coordinated light, sound, and movement across the National Triangle, transforming grand architecture into monumental artworks that serve as a vibrant backdrop for national storytelling.

The festival was born from a mission to showcase Canberra’s unique character, specifically its iconic national collections and striking landscapes. Each year from late February to mid-March, the National Triangle is transformed into an outdoor precinct for after-dark discovery. What began as a collection of lit facades has matured into a sophisticated, multi-layered adventure that balances polished artistry with inclusive, playful exploration. This trajectory has solidified the festival’s reputation as a confident and inspiring celebration, rewarding those who lean in to embrace the joy of discovery.

The Enlighten Program

The program is defined by signature pillars that combine bold, creative experiences with a fun and inclusive spirit:

• The Illuminations: The heart of the festival. This is the only time of year when the Australian Parliament House, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Library, Questacon, the National Portrait Gallery, and MoAD at Old Parliament House unite for an event. Each year, artists use these iconic structures to display artworks ranging from indigenous narratives to contemporary Australian culture, providing a unique visual experience for visitors to the precinct after dark.
• The Festival Hub & Food Park: The festival’s vibrant base camp and social precinct. Enjoy live music and immersive art installations alongside BentSpoke Beer Garden and Bar Berra, featuring an all-local selection of wines and spirits. A curated variety of food trucks from across Australia completes this essential gathering spot at the heart of the action.
• Enlighten: The Night Shift: A program of exclusive after-dark access where national institutions open their doors for unique experiences. During the festival, these cultural landmarks host activities ranging from late-night dining to interactive workshops and performances within the institution’s walls. The program allows visitors to engage with national collections and iconic buildings outside of traditional hours, offering a different perspective on the iconic spaces through curated evening events.
• Symphony in the Park: A free outdoor concert held at Commonwealth Park that pairs the Canberra Symphony Orchestra with Australian musicians for unique orchestral arrangements under the stars. The concert presents musical collaborations for audiences to experience established sounds in a new format. In 2026, Mark Seymour of Hunters & Collectors headlined the evening, performing arrangements of songs including Holy Grail and Throw Your Arms Around Me. This followed previous collaborations with artists such as Electric Fields, the Hoodoo Gurus, and The Bamboos. The event remains a highlight of the festival program, inviting families and visitors to gather for a night of music in an outdoor setting.
• Lights! Canberra! Action!: An annual filmmaking competition and short film festival held in the Senate Rose Gardens, Lights! Canberra! Action! showcases local talent and the creative pulse of the city. Established in 2004, this event invites filmmakers to turn their own city into a movie set. The competition challenges participants to write, shoot, and edit a seven-minute film in 10 days, incorporating a specific theme and ten mystery items. The event culminates in an outdoor screening under the stars, highlighting the city’s stories and the local talent that produces them.
• Enlighten: BEYOND: In recent years, the festival’s spirit has expanded beyond the National Triangle. This city-wide initiative connects the core festival energy with local arts organizations, makers, and businesses throughout Canberra’s suburbs. It transforms the entire ACT into a coordinated celebration of curiosity, ensuring that every corner of the capital glows with the festival’s signature energy.
