For nine days in March Canberrans wake up to a surreal scene, a sun rise dotted with flurries of colour as hot air balloons float across the city. Hours before the break of dawn, while most of the city is still slumbering, a dedicated group of hot air balloon enthusiasts are busy preparing for their early morning flights.
Canberra is set to turn 105 and we reckon once you’ve reach triple digits a single day of celebration isn’t nearly enough. Below are our picks to help celebrate a long weekend of birthday fun.
Wake up to the view of hot air balloons floating across the city during the Canberra Balloon Spectacular. This mesmerising view is best appreciated from the lawns of Old Parliament House. Held over nine days, more than thirty hot air balloons from across the globe are expected to take to our skies this autumn. Remember to keep an eye out for the special shape balloons. This year the festival features Kermie the frog and Jewel the hummingbird.
It may be the eighth year of Enlighten, but there’s no sign that the festival intends on slowing down. Proudly presented by Singapore Airlines, visitors to Enlighten Festival will get to experience the Illuminations (2-11 March) they know and love but with a bigger, better and brighter program across 16 nights in March (2-18 March).
